Staying in Florence (Firenze) is a fascinating weekend for any study abroad student. Florence is a melting pot of hundreds of nationalities. I stayed at a hostel as I wished to make new friends and meet people from around the world. I made two new friends one from Nigeria and one from Switzerland. Both spoke fluent english! I also went to the Chianti region of Tuscany while in Florence for a wine tasting. I went to two different winery's each one has their own claim to fame. Sant' Appiano (family owned winery) is known for its Cottaccio red wine just the perfect balance. Its not bitter, but not too sweet either. It is smooth sipping, and non acidic. The Tenuta Torciano Winery (big company non family owned) is known for its Cavaliere which is part of there renowned Super Tuscan line of red wines. Super Tuscan from Tenuta Torciano is extremely bitter, and very strong. It's not for everyone. I would say it's an acquired taste. Both winery's also make delicious extra virgin olive oils. Also for those that don't know there are special techniques that you can learn when tasting wine to taste all the different flavors in each glass. Learning about techniques, colors, and flavor notes, and food pairing education are all perks of going to a tasting at a winery.
