Patrono Santa Rosa Di Viterbo

Santa Rosa is the Patrono Santa (patron saint) of the town of Viterbo Italy. She was known for her cause in which she served. The cause was helping those who were misunderstood, politically outcasted, those suffering with family problems, those who were harassed for the jobs that they worked in, and she was known for mystical gifts linked with prophecy. She was also known for powers connected with healing. Its said that miracles have happened at her place of rest. Santa Rosa was a strong supporter of the papacy. Santa Rosa spoke out against the political occupation of Viterbo and supported the pope in a time when most people were against the pope. Her father had told her if she didn't stop speaking against politicians he would beat her. However she stood firm in her beliefs and her public religious work in the 3rd Order of St. Francis. Santa Rosa died March 6th, 1250 at the very young age of 17. Her death was at first thought to be the result of tuberculosis but it was then later revealed to have been from a condition known as Pentalogy of Cantrell. This discovery was made by a team of researchers who had the opportunity to study her remains many years after her passing. Santa Rosa's remains also known as relics are on display at the Santuario - Monastero Santa Rosa. I myself am not a practicing Catholic but I am religious just different denomination but I thought the story of this young girl who became a saint after her death was touching she didn't let others stop her from working towards something that she was passionate about. Every year in Viterbo the Festival of the Santa Rosa Macchina is held on September 3rd. A giant statue with a statue of her on top is carried on the shoulders of a team of 100 men through the streets until they reach the ending point in front of Santa Rosa's Monastero. This is a very big festival which draws out seas of 1000's of people who come to witness the carrying of the statue or (macchina) as it's known in Italian language. On the 3rd of September the team of men who will carry the statue go around town to 9 or 10 different churches to be blessed by the church figures before the big event. On the 1st night leading up to the festival (September 1st) a team of children who got the spot on the team for the mini macchina dress in the traditional costume for the event and they carry a much smaller statue known as the Mini Santa Rosa Macchina. The day before the statue a new tradition that just started in the last year occurs. This is a tradition is which they take the glass see through casket with her remains in it through the streets, and then ends back at the Monastero. I believe a religious service is held with higher up church figures after the casket carry event.
